Avionics upgrades to support U.S. Army Chinook helicopters under $472 million contract

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama. Collins Aerospace received a U.S. Army contract worth up to $472 million to provide engineering services supporting modernization and sustainment of the CH-47 Chinook helicopter fleet, the company announced in a statement.
The work will include avionics updates intended to support integration of new capabilities, address component obsolescence, and modify the aircraft's avionics architecture, the statement reads.
Collins Aerospace says its Chinook avionics integrate communications, navigation, and mission subsystems within the aircraft cockpit.
The contract also supports the Army's effort to increase commonality among aviation platforms through open and reusable avionics architectures that can be used across multiple aircraft, according to the statement. The company says this approach is intended to simplify the insertion of new technologies and reduce integration requirements as the Army updates its aviation fleet.
Work under the contract will be performed in Huntsville, Alabama, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the company says.
