Software-defined radio market worth $36.80 billion by 2033, study says

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. The software-defined radio (SDR) market is projected to grow from $23.52 billion in 2026 to $36.80 billion by 2033 -- at a combined annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.6% during the forecast period -- according to a study by MarketsandMarkets, "Software Defined Radio Market by Technology (General Purpose, Tactical & Mission-Critical, Broadband & High-Bandwidth, UAV/Autonomous, Cognitive & AI-Enabled), Frequency (HF/VHF/UHF, L&S, C, X, Ku & Ka), Application, and Region -- Global Forecast to 2033."

The growth of the SDR market, say the study authors, is supported by the rising need for secure and interoperable communication across defense, public-safety, satellite, and commercial wireless networks. Moreover, long-term SDR market growth is supported by growing investment in spectrum sharing, tactical networking, and reconfigurable radio platforms. 

Broken out by technology, the uncrewed aerial system (UAS) and autonomous system sector is expected to register the highest CAGR in the SDR market, of 9.2% between 2026 and 2033.

Several factors, however, may blunt the growth of the SDR market to 2033, according to the study authors: For one thing, SDR systems require advanced hardware, software, waveforms, encryption, and network tools, all of which must pass testing and integration trials before the radio can be used. Additionally, the software and waveforms need regular support throughout their life, which increases development time and cost and subsequently may slow adoption by organizations with limited budgets.
