KONGSBERG, Norway. KONGSBERG has selected Echodyne’s metamaterials electronically scanned array (MESA) radar platform for air and surface applications and integrated the radar with its PROTECTOR RS4 and RS6 remote weapon stations for counter-uncrewed aircraft system (C-UAS) missions, Echodyne announced in a statement.
The radar supplies range, range-rate, bearing, and kinematic data to support fire-control functions, including stabilizing and cueing optical systems onto targets, the company says. Echodyne states that the system is intended to maintain target tracks and provide data used to calculate firing solutions against small aerial threats.
When paired with programmable airburst munitions, the radar’s range and range-rate measurements can support timing of the munition’s effect along a target’s flight path, according to the statement. In networked operations, another sensor can pass a threat track to a radar-equipped weapon station, where the MESA radar can refine and maintain the track for engagement. Echodyne says the companies have spent multiple years integrating, testing, and demonstrating the radar-enabled system.
