KONGSBERG, Norway. International technology contractor Kongsberg Gruppen has signed a contract with the Australian Department of Defense to install new radio frequency (RF) sensors on the Joint Strike Missile (JSM) carried aboard the F-35 fighter aircraft.
The contract -- worth 150 million Norwegian kroner (approximately $17.5 million) -- will enable the RF-seeking sensor (built by BAE Systems Australia) to be installed on the precision-strike missile; the sensors will locate targets by their electronic signatures.
The JSM, which is able to fly low while following the terrain, is currently the only long-range sea and land-target missile that can be carried internally in the F-35.
