Tactical computing for U.S. Army, new-style computing at the edge in PacStar announcements

AUSA 2018--WASHINGTON. PacStar has introduced its PacStar Modular Data Center (MDC), a high-performance expeditionary solution that enables warfighters to access and deploy data-center-class computing and storage at the edge of tactical networks.
According to a company announcement, PacStar Modular Data Center (MDC) is a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)-based modular tactical rugged data center capable of hosting cloud/storage, artificial intelligence (AI), and analytics applications. PacStar MDC employs small-form-factor modules for compute, storage, and networking functions that conform to strict size, weight, and power (SWaP) constraints. The company says that PacStar MDC can be deployed dismounted, in FOBs, command posts, ground vehicles, and aircraft, as well as for military, intelligence, law enforcement, and homeland security use.
PacStar also announced at the show that it had been selected to provide the tactical network baseband solution for the initial sixU.S. Army Security Forces Assistance Brigades (SFAB), with contracts estimated at more than $20 million.
The U.S. Army SFABs are specialized tactical units with the core mission to conduct training, advising, assisting, enabling, and accompanying operations with allied and partner nations. Under the terms of the contract, PacStar solutions will provide vital access for the deployed SFABs to the Army’s tactical-communications network for mission command, fielding, and training efforts over the next three years.
