OKLAHOMA CITY. VITA officials announced that ANSI/VITA 74.0-2017 ? ?Compliant System Small Form Factor Module Base Standard,? commonly known as VNX, reached American National Standards Institute (ANSI) recognition. This standard has completed the VITA and ANSI processes reaching full recognition under guidance of the VITA Standards Organization (VSO).

“The release of the VITA 74 VNX standard provides system designers with the ability to extend proven VPX technology into smaller form factor systems,” says Wayne McGee, chairman of the VNX Marketing Alliance. “Engineers now have an even more effective SWaP sensitive solution utilizing standards based products.”

VITA is the trade association dedicated to fostering American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited, open system architectures in critical embedded system applications. ANSI/VITA 74.0-2017 defines both mechanical and electrical standards to implement a small form factor system. The standard was created to meet the growing needs for improved size, weight and power (SWaP) of embedded computing systems with a rugged, low cost, fast serial fabric interconnect based plug-in module, while leveraging proven features of the popular VPX standards.

The base standard describes details on the mechanical implementation of the system plug-in modules. Two module types are defined, 19mm and 12.5mm, with the functionality of each type dependent on the required interconnections. Fabrication of the module enclosures is left to the vendor. In addition, details are provided for the module base carrier board (traditionally referred to as a backplane), including connector location, assembly hole locations and component keep-out areas.

The 19mm module has room for a two-board stack. Suitable connectors are available from various manufactures to meet the stacking height requirement, with consideration given to board thickness and component heights. This base standard is the first of a family of standards that will define protocol layers, and complimentary physical and electrical standards necessary for a compliant VNX system.
