NEW YORK CITY. U.S. Navy officials are ordering Binocular Night Vision Devices (BNVD) from the L-3 Communications Warrior Systems ? Insight Technology business unit for operators in the U.S. Special Operations Command. The BNVD is smaller and more lightweight than typical night vision goggles.

The devices enable special operations forces with improved identification, surveillance, detection, and recognition capability in all light conditions.

The L-3 BNVD essentially is a miniature dual-tube goggle that uses advanced optics and high-performance image intensifier tubes in a mechanical format that enables it to be lighter and more cost-effective, says Ken Solinsky, president of L-3 Warrior Systems.

Officials at the U.S. Navy’s Naval Surface Warfare Center awarded the contract.
