E-scan radar sale set to bolster India's border security effort

CAMBRIDGE, U.K. Electronic-scanning radar and surveillance company Blighter Surveillance Systems has secured its first sale into India; the company will supply its Blighter B400 series E-scan micro Doppler ground surveillance radars.
System integrator Tata Power Company Limited (Strategic Engineering Division) awarded Blighter the contract following Blighter’s presentation at a radar/sensor trial held by India’s border management organization in Gwalior in November/December 2016. Tata will roll out the Blighter radars during 2018 as part of the Indian government’s Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS).
The Blighter solid-state passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar detects small and slow-moving targets, even in cluttered environments, because it uses coactive frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) micro Doppler fast-scan processing. The PESA's wide (20-degree) elevation beam was a important to the Indian CIBMS project because it enables the radar to operate effectively in all terrains -- allowing simultaneous scan of hills, mountains, plains, riverine territories, and marshes -- without the need to tilt the radar. The wide-angled beam also detects low-flying manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones.
The CIBMS program aims to establish a multitier security ring comprising ground surveillance radar, thermal cameras, unattended ground sensors, seismic vibration systems, fences, and fence protection systems to protect India’s long international borders.
