UUV launch and recovery system to be developed by LBI

GROTON, Conn. Officials at the Combatant Craft Division (CCD) of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, in Norfolk, Virginia selected LBI to design and manufacture a launch and recovery system for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). The five-year contract has a total value of $5.4 million.
Under the contract, LBI will develop a lightweight carbon fiber composite launch and recovery system for UUVs from an 11 meter RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat).
LBI is utilizing the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of Applied Physical Science (APS), also located in Groton, to perform the structural analysis of the composite structures for the system. “APS has significant resources for the finite element analysis of advanced composite structures and is the right company to work with,” says LBI President Peter Legnos.
