ASHBURN, Va. Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions division has launched a new family of DO-254 DAL C and DO-178C DAL C safety certifiable standard commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) processing modules. These Certifiable COTS Modules are designed for use in both military and civil aerospace applications as an alternative to more costly designs.

The family of select DO-254 DAL C and DO-178C DAL C certifiable products feature the design artifact packages required to support successful certification of the customer’s system. Implementing the COTS Modules will provide enhanced speed and reduced cost of developing aviation applications on manned and unmanned platforms.

“Today, the FAA demands that electronics suppliers for civil aviation, and increasingly for military aircraft, certify their system solutions to strict safety certification standards,” comments Lynn Bamford, Senior VP and GM of the Defense Solutions division. “Our Safety Certifiable COTS Module solutions, supported with comprehensive DO-254 and DO-178 data artifact packages, provide a cost-effective alternative to custom designs and speed the deployment of system-level aviation subsystems.”

The first members of the product family are two new SWaP-C modules – VPX3-150 3U VPX single board computer (SBC) and VPX3-718 3U VPX graphics display module. Both modules are compact, rugged, 3U small form factor (SFF) VPX modules. They are designed using a development process that results in a DO-254 Design Assurance Level (DAL) C certifiable product and supporting artifacts.
