Because Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) are invariably designed for specific missions, they tend to be difficult to adapt to changes in mission once built and deployed. Building a UAV that is readily adaptable to different mission parameters requires a new platform approach to UAV architecture. The biggest advantages are significant savings in cost, complexity, and time in the operational phase.

Net-centric principles - making use of data-driven approaches such as those used in the Object Management Groups (OMG's) Data Distribution Service (DDS) standard - are being implemented in a variety of both new and existing tactical weapons systems.
