Rockwell Collins awarded three-year contract for military test ranges
Artist's concept of CRIIS system: Rockwell Collins

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. Rockwell Collins has been awarded an Interim Contractor Support (ICS) contract by the Common Range Integrated Instrumentation System (CRIIS) Program Office at Eglin Air Force Base that includes field support, repair, and security maintenance of the currently fielded CRIIS program for Air Force, Navy, and Army test ranges.

The CRIIS test range instrumentation system replaced legacy range systems -- including Advanced Range Data System (ARDS) and Air-to-Air Range Infrastructure (AARI) systems -- long in use at major U.S. military ranges.

CRIIS was developed to satisfy the Department of Defense's (DoD’s) vision of a common test and training infrastructure with excellent operational realism by providing real-time tracking of air exercise participants up to approximately 350 nautical miles (line of sight plus relay); accurate time, space, and position information under highly dynamic aircraft conditions; and an extended area of control of air, land, and sea participants. CRIIS also uses an open architecture design to support range flexibility; carries multiple independent levels of security architecture; standardizes interface protocols including test- and training-enabling architecture; features software-defined radio (SDR) for waveform and frequency agility; and supports synthetic threats and forces.

Under the terms of the three-year contract, Rockwell Collins will provide traditional product maintenance and repair, training, logistics, and sparing support; it also calls for quarterly reviews and updates to the system security controls to maintain compliance with the applicable Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs).
