Directed energy prototypes to be developed for U.S. Army by BlueHalo

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama. BlueHalo won a $95.4 million contract to continue developing directed energy prototypes for the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) through the Laser technology Research Development and Optimization (LARDO) program, the company announced in a statement.

The contract involves the design and construction of multiple laser weapon prototypes, which will feature increased automation, efficiency, and performance, while also improving aspects related to size, weight, and power (SWAP), the company says.

BlueHalo will leverage its counter-uncrewed aerial system (C-UAS) technologies and the operational insights gained from its LOCUST laser systems to improve system performance and increase the lethality of engagements against small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) and similar threats, the statement reads.
