New rad-hard DC-DC converter released by International Rectifier

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. Engineers at International Rectifier released the GHP2815S radiation-hardened (rad-hard) DC-DC converter for space applications. The low voltage, 15V/8A single output device is designed for extended operation in extreme environments such as geostationary earth orbit satellites and deeps space probes.

The DC-Dc converter's design is based on a fixed frequency topology with magnetic feedback. It integrates features such as output remote sensing, external inhibit, synchronization, and under-voltage lockout. The device comes in a hermetically sealed package -- 3.50 inches long by 2.5 inches wide, by .475 inches high -- including the mounting tabs and I/O pins. The base material is aluminum-silicon-carbide and the kevlar is used as the lid material. the I/O pins are rugged ceramic feed-through copper core Alloy 52.

All of the components are de-rated and comply with MIL-STD-975, MIL-STD-1547, GSFC PPL-21 Appendix B. It has a total ionizing does (TID) greater than 100 KRad(Si) and weights less than 110 grams. The GHP28!5S's DC input range is 18 to 40 V DC and up to 20W for output power with an efficiency as high as 87 percent. The converter-s operating temperature range is 155 to 85 degrees Celsius.
