DARPA program examines battle management in coastal urban environments

ARLINGTON, Va. DARPA has announced a new program that aims to create powerful digital tools for exploring novel expeditionary urban-operations concepts, with enhanced emphasis on coastal cities, where future such battles are deemed most likely to occur.

The program, dubbed Prototype Resilient Operations Testbed for Expeditionary Urban Scenarios (PROTEUS), intends to deliver a software platform for use on a tablet or other personal device that would enable dynamic and adaptive composition of battlefield elements -- including dismounted forces, vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), manned aircraft, and other available assets -- simultaneously across multiple command levels. The program also is focused on development and delivery of an entirely new interactive virtual testbed to evaluate operational concepts spanning multiple domains, including on the ground, undersea, in the air, and on the electromagnetic spectrum.

The vision for the battle management/command and control software is to enable agile precision warfighting so that tactical operators can quickly design, compose, and recompose force packages on the fly to surprise the enemy in complex urban environments.

DARPA is seeking expertise for the PROTEUS program in multiscale game design using scalable software architectures; battle management and command and control, particularly as applied to composable systems; and Marine Corps systems and operations.
