Wind Farm mitigation performed on Netherlands airbase radar systems by Raytheon

HARLOW, England. Raytheon engineers will be upgrading four additional Airport Surveillance Radar sites with the Wind Farm Mitigation kits for Royal Netherlands air force (RNLAF). The upgrade includes WiMax interference filtering (4G filtration) and is expected to be completed within the next 12-15 months.
Wind turbines' rotating blades generate large, moving, false targets that often deluge radars, making it difficult for system controllers to discriminate between genuine and false aircraft targets. This upgrade comes through a combination of software and hardware changes to the primary surveillance radar system. These modifications nullify the presence of wind turbines to improve the probability of aircraft target detection above and beyond wind farms.
Raytheon's first Wind Farm Mitigation upgrade was at the at RNLAF's Woensdrecht Air Base. The company also is looking at potential upgrades in Europe, the U.S., and Canada.
