Navy destroyer detects/tracks medium range ballistic missile

KAUAI, Hawaii. The U.S. Navy completed the Flight Test Other ? 21 (FTX-21), demonstrating the Aegis Baseline 9.C1 capability to detect and track a Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) target.

During the exercise, the target was launched from the Pacific Missile Range facility with the USS John Paul Jones positioned west of Hawaii. Sailors were able to detect and track the target with the AN/SPY-1 radar using the Aegis Baseline 9.C1 weapon system.

The test was conducted with the support of the Missile Defense Agency, U.S. Pacific Command, Lockheed Martin, and Navy sailors aboard USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53). It marks the first demonstration of the Aegis system’s ability to conduct a tracking exercise against a MRBM during its endo phase of flight, Lockheed Martin officials say.

The FTX-21 test helps to reduce risks for future events. This was a non-intercept test and the ship did not launch any rounds during this engagement.
