U.S. Army's Apache AH-64 completes flight test with high energy laser - News

MCKINNEY, Texas. The U.S. Army Apache Program Management Office collaborated with the U.S. Special Operations Command and Raytheon to complete a flight test of a high energy laser system onboard an Apache AH-64 at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. The demonstration marks the first time that a fully integrated laser system engaged and fired on a target from a rotary-wing aircraft over a wide variety of flight regimes, altitudes, and air speeds, officials say.

I'm often preaching in this space about how the demand for commonality is driving procurement and technology development within the Department of Defense (DoD), a demand brought on by the DoD budget cuts the last few years and sequestration. Now, with budget increases promised by the Trump administration, I see the demand only growing because it just makes good business sense; I also see a number of initiatives currently pushing for more open architectures and technology reuse across multiple platforms.
