ROCHESTER, N.Y. Officials at Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) and ITT Exelis have joined hands to build a manned aircraft-based Wide-Area Airborne Persistent Surveillance (WAPS) system, dubbed Vigilant Stare. It is inspired by a similar U.S. Air Force system.

Vigilant Stare will provide infrared and visible coverage of city-sized areas, enabling real-time motion imagery to be directly delivered to various users involved in domestic support missions. The system’s motion imagery simultaneously covers three different tiers: full field of regard, best-resolution tactical chip-outs, and multiple sub-views of the full field of view.

Users can get access to the products through an enterprise dissemination backend with the best-resolution chip-outs provided in real time directly to users involved in ground operations.
