WASHINGTON. The Department of Defense (DoD) Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) announced that it is working toward the implementation of responsible artificial intelligence (AI) by announcing the piloting of a procurement review process that will aim to ensure AI acquired by the JAIC is accordance with the DoD's AI Ethics Principles.

Officials claim that the DoD AI Ethics Principles, along with operational commitments, are outlined in the recently issued memorandum on implementing responsible AI. Responsible AI Institute, a non-profit focused on providing certification for advancing trustworthy AI, has announced their role in support of the pilot.

According to the company, the Responsible AI Procurement pilot is part of a holistic approach that focuses not only on the technology but also on organizational operating structures and culture to advance Responsible AI within the DoD. It will aim to establish clear guidance and expectations for those who are interested in working with the DoD to ensure responsible development and use of AI.

Establishing ethical use of AI in military technology systems has been regarded by industry professionals as one of the primary obstacles in the widespread utilization of AI-powered systems in the DoD.

The corresponding news release states that foundational procurement protocols will be developed and piloted through JAIC's Tradewind Initiative, which is a partnership with Indiana Innovation Institute. This AI procurement marketplace is focused on developing processes, guidelines, infrastructure, and assessments for the evaluation and procurement of AI capabilities for the DoD.
