RIO DE JANEIRO. The Argentine air force (AAF) announced that it will use the Flight2 avionics system from Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the country's C-130 upgrade program. Work already started the end of last year with L-3 Platform Integration, prime contractor for the upgrade program, installing equipment on five aircraft.

The Rockwell Collins Flight2 avionics system will give the AAFC-130 aircraft unrestricted access to global airspace by complying with Communication, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) airspace requirements currently identified.

The upgrade provides a full glass cockpit with new primary flight displays and a Required Navigation Performance/Area Navigation flight management system with High Altitude Release Point/Computed Air Release Point precision air drop software. Other upgrade features include communication and SATCOM radios, an autopilot, navigation sensors and surveillance systems with a Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), APN-241 precision ground mapping radar integration, a Terrain Awareness and Warning System, and a digital map.

The first aircraft integration was performed at L-3 Platform Integration's Waco, Texas facility. The remaining four aircraft will be upgraded at the FAdeA modification facility in Cordoba, Argentina, with L-3 support.
