F-22 Raptor's head-up display upgrades to digital

ARLINGTON, Va. U.S. Lockheed Martin officials selected BAE Systems to modernize the U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor's head-up display (HUD) by upgrading it to a full digital version.
Under contract, engineers will use the BAE System's Digital Light Engine (DLE) technology to implement a form, fit, and function HUD solution that integrates into the F-22’s existing HUD space. Company officials are then anticipating a follow-on production contract to retrofit the F-22 fleet’s current HUDs with the DLE solution.
Officials say, the upgrade removes the conventional cathode ray tube image source and introduces a digital display solution. The digital technology offers increased reliability, eliminates high-maintenance and obsolete items, and provides a constant luminance performance.
