SAN ANTONIO, Texas. The market for military and public-services helicopters is facing a slow recovery globally, following nearly 10 years of stagnation and delayed programs in key regions, according to a new study from Frost & Sullivan, "Global Military and Public Services Helicopters Market, Forecast to 2026."

Frost & Sullivan expects that new developments in rotorcraft will mainly revolve around reducing accident rates; catching up with fixed-wing aircraft technology in the areas of avionics and tactical communications; and going deeper into unmanned aerial system (UAS) operations whilst tackling asymmetric threats from hostile UASs in asymmetric combat.

In addition, the report shows that other players from the commercial helicopter industry are expected to penetrate into the military market at the service levels, beyond maintenance/repair/operations and basic logistics support, with new operating business models offered to relieve military budget pressures. These newer business models (leasing, outsourcing) are expected to be limited to noncritical missions.

Another finding of note in the research is the expectation of upcoming high-value helicopter procurement opportunities in third-world countries and emerging markets -- such as India and Brazil -- to replace the retiring older fleet.
