Inertial Navigation System Eurofighter Tranche 3 to be supplied by Northrop Grumman

POMEZIA, Italy. Officials at Alenia Aermacchi and the Eurofighter Consortium selected Northrop Grumman Corp. to deliver inertial and satellite navigation systems for the Tranche 3 of the Eurofighter Typhoon multirole combat fighter aircraft.

The Eurofighter Fibre-optical Gyro Inertial Navigation System and a GPS receiver for the Eurofighter aircraft will be provided by Northrop Grumman Italia. Participating nations include the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, and Spain.

To date Northrop Grumman Italia has delivered more than 400 inertial navigation systems for Eurofighter Tranches 1 and 2. This new contract is worth 30 million euros.

The INS system is based on high-accuracy fibre-optic gyro technology and long with the GPS receiver integrates features, such as selective availability/anti-spoofing module architecture and an anti-jam antenna system. The GPS component supports future upgrades such as digital maps and direct drive display, which uses a graphics processor that can directly control the aircraft's multifunction displays to enhance performance in the fighter's avionics.
