Aegis Combat System receives certification for its Baseline 9.C1

MOORESTOWN, N.J. Missile Defense Agency officials with U.S. Navy Officials certified Baseline 9.C1, the latest evolution of the Aegis Combat System for the U.S. destroyer fleet.

This certification comes after the U.S. Navy and the Missile Defense Agency conducted Multi-Mission Warfare tests aboard the USS John Paul Jones (DDG-53) last summer. During each event each target was intercepted, officials say.

The Baseline 9.C1 offers capabilities that include simultaneous air and ballistic missile defense. It also allows Aegis ships to automatically coordinate defense with input from satellite and ground-based radar assets, says Jim Sheridan, Lockheed Martin director of Aegis programs.

It comes with the BMD 5.0 capability upgrade, which can shoot down ballistic missiles in the exo- and endo-atmosphere. Aegis merges BMD and anti-air warfare into its Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) capability using commercial-off-the-shelf and open architecture technologies.The central component of the Lockheed Martin-developed Aegis BMD Combat System is the SPY-1 radar and Baseline 9.C1 improves radar resolution and discrimination abilities, according to officials.
