WASHINGTON. The first array of a massive update of the Navy’s surface electronic warfare (EW) systems is set to undergo ground testing later in 2021, part of the U.S. Navy's AN/SLQ-32(V)7 Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) under Northrop Grumman Block 3 SEWIP effort.

The tests follow more than 10 years of improvements to the Navy’s older surface EW systems, spurred by the specter of a new generation of adversaries' weapons coming online.

The software-defined SEWIP is a family of EW systems designed to defend ships against antiship missile attacks, enhance situational awareness across the electromagnetic spectrum, and execute other types of EW functions.
