R&D Aviation Centre of Excellence facility opens its doors in Ireland

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. The Aviation Centre of Excellence has opened its doors in Ennis, Ireland. The research and development facility will support design, development, and manufacturing of Microsemi’s product line of aviation intelligent power solutions (IPS).

The facility will provide aviation electric actuation and power conversion applications, as well as give customers access to a technical service provider, says Jim Aralis, chief technology officer and vice president of advanced development at Microsemi.

The company is developing IPS products for a variety of applications within the commercial aviation industry. Among the products of Microsemi’s Aviation Centre of Excellence is the aviation power core module (PCM) with an integrated FPGA and hybrid power drive stage. The PCM controls the electrical motors used in applications such as primary flight control actuation and landing gear systems. It interfaces with aircraft power supplies and flight computers, providing sensor feedback for monitoring.

The facility is equipped with modeling, simulation, analysis, and algorithm development capabilities. The measuring equipment enables product testing while the laboratory facilitates product qualification and long-term application specific life testing.

Microsemi established its presence in Ireland in 1992 through the acquisition of a facility in Ennis, Co. Clare and in 2012 the company named the Ennis facility as its European headquarters.
