U.S. Army to enhance helmet-mounted display for tactical trainers

ORLANDO, Fla. The U.S. Army has selected an updated version of the Rockwell Collins SimEye helmet-mounted display (HMD) to be used within Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainer (AVCATT) systems.
Rockwell Collins officials say that the work performed under the contract -- issued by the U.S. Army Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) -- will improve HMD optical performance, increase availability, and provide substantial life cycle cost savings due to lower maintenance requirements.
Under the terms of the contract, the SimEye HMD will be refined to include display and optical improvements to visual symbology, enhancing the display's level of realism. Along with a software update, the HMD upgrade will also enable the Army to continue to use the AVCATT to train its helicopter crews.
A total of 332 HMDs will be upgraded and is expected to be completed in October 2019.
