LONDON. England's Royal navy received the final Platform Management System (PMS) hardware from Northrop Grumman Corp. for the Astute-class series' boat 5 submarine. The announcement was made during the DSeI show in London this week.
Under a performance partnering arrangement,s the Sperry Marine business unit of Northrop Grumman delivered the PMS to BAE Systems Maritime–Submarines for installation on the Astute Boat 5, Anson, at its shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, U.K. The PMS technology controls and monitors the submarine's platform machinery and its onboard systems.
Northrop Grumman also is under contract to deliver PMS hardware and software for Astute Boat 4 ( Audacious) and the planned Astute boats 6 and 7, which will be the Royal navy's newest nuclear-powered submarines.
Northrop Grumman officials say the PMS should to reduce life cycle costs and reduce program risk for the U.K. Ministry of Defense due to its use of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software. The PMS also is scaleable and flexible thanks to its open architecture design that enables interfacing with third-party equipment via standard field-bus technology.
