MANASSAS, Va. Engineers at Aurora Flight Sciences completed its planned flight test program of the company's XV-24A LightningStrike Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) X-Plane subscale vehicle demonstrator (SVD) aircraft. The project, which is funded through Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), demonstrated technical features of the XV-24A including outbound and inbound transition flight.

ARLINGTON, Va. Aurora Flight Sciences engineers performed a full-scale technology demonstration system that repeatedly captured a 400-pound Lockheed Martin Fury unmanned aerial systems (UAS) that accelerated to representative flight speeds via an external catapult. The test was conducted in December 2016 for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) SideArm research effort, which seeks to create a self-contained, portable apparatus able to horizontally launch and retrieve UASs of up to 900 pounds.

Engineers at Aurora Flight Sciences demonstrated automated flight capabilities under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency?s (DARPA) Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS) program. During the demonstration, engineers flew a Cessna Caravan through basic maneuvers under the supervision of a pilot.
