Non-tactical vehicle-to-grid tech can help reduce energy costs for USAF, Army - News

WASHINGTON. At the Los Angeles Air Force Base, the Defense Department’s all-electric, non-tactical vehicle completed testing for the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) certification. The U.S. Air Force, Army, industry, and academia formed a partnership to develop V2G bi-directional flow of power technology to use in plug-in electrical vehicles (PEV).

The training ground is expected to open up to all units in late summer of 2015 and will provide soldiers with a realistic environment that applies the skills learned in a classroom training curriculum.

RDECOM investigates carbon nanotubes for rotor blade improvement - News

ADELPHI, MD. The U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) research laboratory is conducting a study on the insertion of carbon nanotubes into helicopter rotor blades. Researchers are hopeful that the nanotubes will provide improved performance for design and fabrication of next-generation rotor blades and fixed wings.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. Army Deputy Chief of Staff G-8 Lt. Gen. James Barclay III, , told audiences at the Association of the U.S. Army's (AUSA) Winter Symposium today that fielding of all combat lift and attack helicopters will be delayed due to the completion of a new modernization strategy based sequestration. The Army’s AH-64 Apache, UH-60 Black Hawk and CH-47 helicopter upgrade programs will be extended by as much as five years, as the Army prepares for a possible loss of $18 billion in maintenance and operations funding if the March 1 sequester takes effect.

WASHINGTON – Completion of the U.S. Army’s first Bell OH-58F Kiowa Warrior helicopter at a prototype facility was announced at AUSA. The new variant of the Kiowa Warrior was designed and built by the Army’s Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center (AMRDEC), and instrumentation is now beginning for its first expected flight test in April.
