ITHACA, N.Y. GrammaTech, Inc., a leading developer of commercial embedded software assurance tools and advanced cybersecurity solutions, announced today that it has been awarded a $9 million, three-year contract from the Office of Naval Research, a division of the United States Department of the Navy, to perform research and development into cutting-edge techniques for hardening and modernizing legacy software.

The goal of GrammaTech’s contribution to the overall program is to advance the field of cyber hardening to enable the re-use of critical legacy systems, including cyber-physical systems, in new situations. GrammaTech’s focus will be on automated technologies to reduce layers of abstraction, indirection, and other inefficiencies introduced by modern software-development practices. This same technology can also be used to reduce the time between detecting a vulnerability and re-deployment of a repaired system.

GrammaTech’s system will be built on top of the binary-transformation technologies underlying their cyber-hardening capabilities that contributed to the Ithaca-based firm’s success at DARPA Cyber Grand Challenge in 2016. End users will be able to transform their critical applications to shrink the attack surface, improve performance, lower memory consumption, and reduce complexity—all without breaking the application or disrupting operations.
