Thank you to our veterans

One of the best things is not just covering the technology used by the U.S. military, but getting to know the men and women, who use that technology to keep us safe. It continues to be a privilege. Today, all of us at Military Embedded Systems and OpenSystems Media wish every man and woman who serves today or has served a Happy Veteran?s Day and a heartfelt thank you for your service.

Each Veterans Day I like to pause and think on the veterans -- living and dead -- who have touched my life. It always starts with my grandfather, Albert Volpe, an Italian immigrant and U.S. Army veteran during World War I.

Also, my late friend and second father, Ron Mastro who served on Navy helicopters during the 1960s and my cousin Steven Caucci, who lost his life during Vietnam, before I could ever know him. Plus, my father-in-law, Elliot Honan, who likes to tell how he jumped out of Army airplanes in the 1950s long before he ever landed in a plane.

I speak for my colleagues when I say how grateful we are to work with a pair of veterans at OpenSystems Media -- Mariana Iriarte, a retired Navy electrician who is now our Technology Editor and Jerry Gipper, an Air Force vet who not only leads the VITA standards organization, but also runs our VITA Technologies magazine. Thank you both for your service!

Please be sure to thank every serving man and woman you meet as well as the veterans, and not just on Veterans Day, but wherever you encounter them. They deserve it and they will appreciate it.

Another way to say thank you is to support the many charities that aid military veterans and their families. Each issue, we highlight a different military charity and provide a donation, giving back to those who help protect us.

Some of the charities we’ve highlighted include Wounded Warrior Foundation, the Folds of Honor Foundation, Operation Homefront, the Navy Seal Foundation, Operation Delta Dog, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, and many more.
