WASHINGTON. U.S. Navy officials are adding funding for two Littoral Combat Ships (LCSs) to be produced a Lockheed Martin-led industry team under a $715 million modification to an existing contract. The two ships will be the third and fourth vessels in a 10-ship contract awarded back in late 2010.

Under the latest modification, the Lockheed Martin team will build Little Rock (LCS 9) and Sioux City (LCS 11). The first two LCSs -- Milwaukee (LCS 5) and Detroit (LCS 7) -- are already being built.

The USS Freedom (LCS 1), currently being prepared for her next deployment, and the Fort Worth (LCS 3), which will be commissioned in September, were built under previous contracts.

Engineers at Marinette Marine Corp., a Fincantieri company, are building the ships in Marinette, Wis., with engineering support provided by naval architect Gibbs & Cox in Arlington, Va. More than 700 companies are working on Lockheed Martin’s Freedom-variant LCS program.
