Navy places initial order to upgrade primary long-rage AN/SPS-48E radar

MELBOURNE, Fla. U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) officials have placed an initial order with Harris Corp. to upgrade the Navy’s primary long-range, 3-D defense radar. The order is worth an estimated $39 million and includes three one-year options.
Under contract, Harris engineers will upgrade AN/SPS-48E radars to the SPS-48G version that uses a solid-state transmitter. The contract falls under the Navy's Radar Obsolescence and Availability Recovery (ROAR) program.
"The radar is expected to remain in operation through the year 2050," says Rich Sorelle, president, Harris Electronic Warfare business unit.
