Northrop Grumman Smart Node Pod demonstrates C4ISR interoperability - News

FALLS CHURCH, Va. Northrop Grumman recently demonstrated how its Smart Node Pod -- a small, self-contained, aircraft-mounted system -- can aid in battlefield communications and information-sharing across a wide variety of networks and mission threads. The Smart Node Pod's capabilities were presented during Bold Quest, a coalition demonstration and assessment event sponsored twice yearly by the Joint Staff at the Department of Defense (DoD); Bold Quest 16.2 was conducted in the Savannah, Georgia, area from mid-October through early November.

Two key acquisitions colored the fall season in the embedded world, both of which will affect military embedded computing applications. One was at the component level, the other at the board and subsystem level, as Qualcomm bought NXP, formerly Freescale, for about $47 billion and then soon after Mercury Systems picked up avionics computer supplier Creative Electronic Systems (CES) for about $38 million.

Northrop Grumman Corp. engineers will design C4ISR and machinery control systems (MCS) for the U.S. Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters (OPC) under a contract from Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG). As many as 25 OPCs are expected to be built by the Coast Guard to replace its entire fleet of medium endurance cutters.
