Department of Defense (DoD) technology procurement is undergoing significant changes and reforms mostly driven by economical challenges and funding cutbacks. One change is to push the cost burden of research and development onto defense suppliers, often forcing these companies to employ more of a commercial model of development. In this Q&A with Andrew Teich, the new President and CEO of FLIR Systems, a leading designer and manufacturer of thermal imaging infrared sensors, he discusses how FLIR is navigating these procurement challenges and also discusses how thermal imaging technology will move beyond the military and into the commercial space. Integration for JPSS-1's Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer suite completed by Raytheon - News

EL SEGUNDO, CA. Raytheon completed integration and manufacturing for the subassemblies in of its second Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer (VIIR) suite, which will soon fly on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1) spacecraft. The integrated sensor, currently beginning testing, is scheduled for delivery in 2015.

CARLSBAD, Calif. BAE Systems, UK chose ViaSat Inc., to deliver the Small Tactical Terminal (STT) KOR-24 for installation on the Cobham Falcon 20 to support Link 16 network pre-deployment training. The STT, which was co-developed by ViaSat and Harris Corp., is a certified VHF/UHF and Link 16 two-channel radio that is authorized for transmission in the UK airspace on any platform that has the same clearance approval.

Inflight MUOS testing completed for ARC-210 SDR - News

Rockwell Collins and Lockheed Martin engineers completed airborne testing of the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) and the new Wideband Code Divisional Multiple Access (WCDMA) waveform leveraging the latest version of the Rockwell Collins ARC-210 airborne software defined radio (SDR). Rockwell Collins made the announcement at the MILCOM show in San Diego this week.

TEWKSBURY, MA. Raytheon won a $406 million contract to deliver AN/SPY-1 radar transmitters and MK99 Fire Control Systems for the Navy's AEGIS program. The systems perform track and missile guidance functions for AEGIS. Rockwell Collins's synthetic vision technology, used in business jet cockpits, will enhance the SOAR pilots' situational awareness in degraded environments. The program goal is to develop, qualify, and field a DVE solution can by 2018.

General Dynamics Information Technology won a task order to provide information technology (IT) management services supporting U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Middle East District reconstruction and infrastructure-development programs in Afghanistan. F-35 alternate helmet development halted - News

The F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) officials halted development of the alternate F-35 helmet and will now focus only on maturing the Vision Systems Generation 2 (Gen 2) helmet from Rockwell Collins Elbit Systems of America that is currently used in F-35 training and testing. The program will recoup about $45 million in funds that it had originally set aside for developing the alternate helmet.
