Helicopter-based electronic warfare system passes Navy review

SYRACUSE, N.Y. Lockheed Martin reported that its Advanced Off-Board Electronic Warfare (AOEW) system has passed its Preliminary Design Review from the U.S. Navy on schedule, which means that the system has demonstrated outstanding sustained performance. The AOEW system will provide Navy MH-60 helicopters with enhanced electronic warfare (EW) surveillance and countermeasure capabilities against anti-ship missile (ASM) threats.

The AOEW AMP AN/ALQ-248 can work independently or with the ship's onboard electronic surveillance sensor pod -- the SEWIP Block 2 AN/SLQ-32(V)6 -- to detect and evaluate incoming missiles. AOEW then uses radio frequency (RF) countermeasure techniques to deter the missile.

Construction of the AOEW systems is slated to begin in early 2018 at Lockheed Martin's Syracuse, New York, facility. The Owego, New York, team will integrate the system onto the MH-60 helicopters, which are built by Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company.
