Australian military buys $235 million of Harris radio technology

MELBOURNE, Fla., The Australian Department of Defense rewarded Harris Corp. in Melbourne, Fla., with a $235 million contract for new radio systems as part of the country?s efforts to modernize its tactical radio program with Type-1 tactical data and voice communications.
Harris engineers will provide the Australian Defense Force (ADF) with Harris Falcon III AN/PRC-152(C) multiband, multi-mode handheld radios for beyond-line-of-sight and portable-line-of-sight communications.
The AN/PRC-152(C) radios use the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Software Communications Architecture (SCA)-certified handheld radio. ADF also are getting the Harris Falcon II AN/PRC-150(C) manpack radio system, which is a type-1 certified HF radio. Both radios are being provided to the ADF under the Joint Project 2072 program.
Harris engineers will support delivery, training, and installation for the radios through its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Brisbane, Australia.
The Falcon III communicates over the 30 MHz to 512 MHz frequency range. It supports SINCGARS, Havequick II, VHF/UHF AM and FM, APCO P25 and both DAMA and the new Integrated Waveform for satellite communications. The Falcon II covers the 1.6 MHz to 60 MHz frequency range and has a removable keypad/display unit.
