With ever-improving user mobile devices, network infrastructure must also be improved and developed at a similar rate. Every generation of communication standards has improved data throughput and latency, and 5G is no different. This new standard will pave the way for new applications and increase data throughput of cellular networks tenfold. 5G for the military is expected to – among other uses – improve intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems and processing; enable new methods of command and control (C2); and streamline logistics systems for increased efficiency.

As communications technologies evolve rapidly, performing test and measurement on communications equipment more easily and flexibly has become increasingly crucial, particularly in military applications. Software-defined radio (SDR) technology-based testing equipment provides the cost efficiency, flexibility, and power to move forward these communications. Test-and-measurement equipment manufacturers must ensure that their product can help their customers accelerate their testing process and expand their testing capabilities, in order to shorten their time to market, reduce costs (as fewer pieces of testing equipment would be needed), and gain a better return on investment (ROI) on their existing testing equipment.

The design of radio equipment for the military market has evolved significantly from the use of transistor-based circuits to specialized and powerful integrated circuits (ICs). Designs may be geared towards rigid, single-purpose platforms or towards flexible, application-agnostic systems with dedicated digital signal processors (DSPs), such as software-defined radio (SDR). The one thing all of these approaches have in common: difficulty in estimating and understanding the cost/performance trade-offs of new designs.

Software-defined radio (SDR) is not a new technology for the military, having been developed for defense communications. However, it has evolved beyond the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program, which is now obsolete. Although JTRS is no longer an active program, some variations of the system have survived, like the Rifleman Radio, MIDS J, and the HMS Manpack.

To be ready for modern warfare, military communication on the battlefield needs to be interoperable, adaptable, and fast. Software-defined radio (SDR) is the solution that makes seamless communication on the battlefield possible.
