CHELMSFORD, Mass. Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems (SAS) officials selected Mercury Computer Systems to provide an advanced sensor processing subsystem for Raytheon?s Multi-function Image Processor (MIP Application-Ready Subsystem (ARS) as well as integration services for Raytheon?s Advanced Distributed Aperture System (ADAS).

Raytheon’s ADAS enables spherical situational awareness for helicopter crews. Multiple high-resolution infrared sensors that are mounted around the helicopter enables pilots to look through the airframe for 360-degree situational awareness. Imagery is sent to helmet mounted displays to provide the crew with data customized to their specific roles. The wraparound effect is topped off by a 3D audio system that provides threat alerts and crew communications from the direction of their source.

Raytheon engineers are enhancing the Advanced Distributed Aperture System in cooperation with officials at the U.S. Army's Research Development and Engineering Command; Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center; and Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate.

The Mercury Application-Ready Subsystem (ARS) sensor processing subsystem that leverages heterogeneous processing elements such as FPGAs, GPPs, and GPGPUs, interconnected with various high-speed switch fabrics. The ugged system will help improve mission effectiveness and flight safety in poor visibility, at low altitude, and in hostile environments. The OpenVPX system enables rapid future technology insertions through new processing capabilities or handling new sensors or new modalities. Mercury’s Services and Systems Integration team will finish the technology integration.
