SOUTH BEND, Ind. Vehicle maker AM General has received a five-year, firm-fixed-price Foreign Military Sale (FMS) requirements contract from the U.S. Army Contracting Command to manufacture approximately 11,560 new High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs, commonly known as the Humvee). The total value of the contract is approximately $2.2 billion.

Under the terms of the contract, AM General will provide a range of vehicle variants, including protected weapons carriers, cargo transporters, communications vehicles, and ambulances.

AM General says that its updated HMMWV has boosted the vehicle's torque by 70 percent, enhanced the overdrive combined with a two-speed full-time all-wheel-drive transfer case, increased the cooling capacity by 50 percent, boosted the power generation/electrical system by 400 percent, and increased the suspension and chassis to handle a 50 percent increase in gross vehicle weight capacity.
