Optronics for use in airborne platforms to be worth $2.5 billion by 2025, study finds

NORTHBROOK, Ill. The market for airborne optronics -- optical and vision equipment used by armed forces and security personnel for monitoring, identification, and classification purposes -- is projected to grow from $1.4 billion in 2020 to $2.5 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 12.7% during the study period, according to a new study by MarketsandMarkets, "Airborne Optronics Market by End Use, System, Technology (Hyperspectral, Multispectral), Application (Commercial, Military, Space), Aircraft Type (Fixed Wing, Rotary Wing, Urban Air Mobility, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and Region - Forecast to 2025." 

Driving that market growth, the study authors say, will be such factors as industrywide modernization and technological advancements, a growing fleet of combat and commercial aircraft, and increased deployment of electro-optics in unmanned vehicles. 

Based on market segment, the surveillance-system segment is expected to be the largest market by value, spurred in large part by the increasing use of small unmanned aerial systems (UASs) in the military sector, along with long-range and high-altitude UASs to provide battlefield intelligence. The study authors state that small UASs help monitor enemy forces or specific areas and send video feedback to ground stations with the help of GPS, plus are used for ISR [intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance] operations to record information regarding potential targets that are otherwise challenging to detect.

By region, North America is projected to see the largest share of growht in the optronics market over the study period.
