STUTTGART, Germany. Hartmann Electronic has unveiled a complete reference system that is aligned to the Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) Technical Standard and is designed to enhance the interoperability and performance in military applications, the company announced in a statement.

How artificial intelligence (AI) at the edge is defined often depends who you are speaking with and their market. For military electronics I think the best definition comes from Jake Braegelmann, Vice President of Business Development at New Wave Design, who says the edge is where the sensor collects the data and AI can enable the filtering of that data in real-time to get actionable intelligence to decision makers. Our fourth annual SOSA Special Edition highlights editorial content covering The Open Group Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) Technical Standard from the pages and website of Military Embedded Systems magazine, as well as the products aligned and conformant to the standard – all put together exclusively by our staff.

It’s been nearly three years since ratification of the Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) Technical Standard 1.0 and its impact is being felt across the services as requests for SOSA aligned products are finding their way into program requirements. SOSA, an example of the modular open systems approach (MOSA) mandated by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), is also changing the way government leverages commercial technology and existing open standards like VPX. To learn more, I gathered a roundtable of SOSA Consortium members to discuss SOSA’s impact on the community, business practices, common misconceptions, and the future of what SOSA may look like five or 10 years down the road.
