PORTLAND, Ore. Pacific Northwest shipbuilder Vigor has won a contract -- totaling as much as $979 million over 10 years -- to build the U.S. Army?s Maneuver Support Vessel (Light), MSV(L), a new generation of landing craft for the U.S. Army. The Vigor MSV(L) design will replace the Army's fleet of aging LCM-8 "Mike" boats.

ORLANDO, Fla. Researchers at the University of Central Florida (UCF) have generated what is being deemed the fastest light pulse ever developed.The 53-attosecond pulse, produced by professor Zenhgu Chang -- UCF trustee chair and professor in the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers, College of Optics and Photonics, and Department of Physics together with his engineering group at the university, beats the team's record of a 67-attosecond extreme ultraviolet light pulse set in 2012. (One attosecond is one-quintillionth of a second.)

SYRACUSE, N.Y. Saab Defense and Security has obtained a contract from the U.S. Navy to provide its Sea Giraffe Agile Multi Beam (AMB), Multi-Mode Radar (MMR) for deployment with the U.S. Coast Guard. The value of the initial order -- covering the procurement of two systems -- amounts to $16.8 million but with options for additional radars the contract may be worth as much as $118.5 million.

Ship maker General Dynamics Bath Iron Works has gotten the green light from the U.S. Navy to proceed with the planning and construction of two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, DDG 126 and DDG 127. DDG 126 was awarded under the contract that was part of a multiyear competition for DDG 51-class destroyers in 2013, while DDG 127 was approved by Congress under separate legislation.The contract modification fully funds the two ships.
