CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. BAE Systems' military GPS business unit has begun work on a $247 million contract from the U.S. Space Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center to design and manufacture an advanced military GPS receiver and next-generation semiconductor. 

ATLANTA. Scientific Research Corp. has won a $95 million contract with the 16th Air Force organization to support both command-and-control and service cryptologic element roles. 

U.S. ARMY FACILITY -- ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. The U.S. Army is working on improving situational awareness of the electromagnetic battlefield, embarking on projects that aim to develop spectrum-sensing capabilities that will give soldiers enhanced awareness of their own radio emissions.

NORTHBROOK, Ill. The global market for battlefield-management systems market is projected to grow from $9.5 billion in 2020 to $11.8 billion by 2025, a combined annual growth rate of 4.3% over the study period, according to new market research from MarketsandMarkets, "Battlefield Management Systems Market -- Global Forecast to 2025."

LOS ANGELES. Aerojet Rocketdyne recently received a contract award to deliver up to two multi-mission radioisotope thermoelectric generators (MMRTG) -- radioisotope power systems that have been used as reliable electrical power sources on multiple deep-space missions -- to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for use in future planetary science missions.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. BAE Systems has signed a contract option worth $184 million with the U.S. Marine Corps to provide more amphibious combat vehicles (ACV) under full-rate production.

ARLINGTON, Va. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) awarded several contracts under its LongShot program, which is aimed at development of an air-launched unmanned air vehicle (UAV) that can deploy multiple air-to-air weapons.

IEEE INTERNATIONAL ELECTRON DEVICE MEETING 2020. Separate research groups in the U.S. and Belgium believe that a new kind of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) could hold bits hundreds or thousands of times longer than commercial DRAM and enable huge savings in space and energy when used for artificial intelligence (AI) and large neural nets. 

The clamor for more bandwidth for military use grows louder all the time, especially as 5G [fifth-generation wireless] networks promise to boost access to mission-critical communications, improve virtual reality/augmented reality tools for troops, and better support autonomous vehicles. In fact, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), in its May 2020 report outlining the government’s 5G strategy, called 5G broadband a “critical strategic technology” that the U.S. telecommunications industry must master so as to gain “long-term economic and military advantage.”

LONDON. Existing hypersonics programs in the U.S. are increasing in maturity and are likely to make major moves toward the production stage in 2021, according to a new report from GlobalData, "Hypersonic Technology in Aerospace and Defense."

U.S. ARMY INSTALLATION -- FORT GORDON, Ga. The U.S. Army expanded its cyber mission as it formally activated the Bravo Company of the 915th Cyberspace Warfare Battalion during a ceremony held in late January 2021.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. Collins Aerospace and project teammate Leonardo DRS announce the successful initial flight of the TCTS Inc. II Air Combat Training program on an operational F/A-18E/F Hornet by pilots in the U.S. Navy. The initial flight took place out of Naval Air Station Patunxet River (Maryland).

ATLANTA. Communications company Envistacom has won a three-year, $235 million contract to supply communications and IT infrastructure support services for services under the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

AMSTERDAM. The global defense battery market -- totaling $1.87 billion in 2020 -- is anticipated to reach a value of around $3.36 billion by 2029, a combined annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 6.47% over the forecast period, according to a new study from Market Forecast, "Global Military Batteries -- Market and Technology Forecast to 2029."

SAN DIEGO. A new technology pilot program -- called the 5G Living Lab -- is now operational at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar in San Diego, part of a $4 million initiative funded through the Office of Naval Research and Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific and run by nonprofit concern US Ignite.

HERNDON, Va. Satellite company HawkEye 360 announced that its second cluster of satellites has successfully been deployed into orbit and will soon be detecting, characterizing, and geolocating different kinds of radio frequency (RF) signals; the satellites were launched aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 on January 24.
