PORTSMOUTH, U.K. Britain's navy has announced that it will field what it says will be the largest and most complex unmanned submarine operated by a European navy; the goal, say officials, is for the uncrewed submarine to work side-by-side with traditional crewed submarines or independently. 

ARLINGTON, Va. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and U.S. Cyber Command (CYBERCOM. a command under the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) kicked off a pilot program intended to place new cyber capabilities more quickly into the hands of operators and warfighters.

DUBLIN. The global market for military avionics -- electronic systems in military aviation that enable pilots and crews to perform such operations as combat, command and control, ISR [intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance], and radar tasks -- is projected to register a CAGR of 4.99% over the period 2022 to 2030, according to a report from Research and Markets, "Military Avionics -- Market and Technology Forecast to 2030."

GOTHENBURG, Sweden. Electronics maker CAES announced that it gave its first commercial U.S.-based license for its RISC-V/NOEL-V processor CPU core to Idaho Scientific (Boise, Idaho), a company that develops products that protect hardware and software systems that support critical infrastructure.

An ongoing project intends to enable military and other scientists to monitor and even enhance the ways in which a soldier’s brain sleeps and, importantly, attains rest and repair. The effort – a collaboration between the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC) Military Operational Medicine Research Program (MOMRP) and scientists and engineers at Rice University (Houston, Texas) – is only one of a group of sensor-driven military projects seeking to create wearable technology to track and improve soldier performance and outcomes.

HUDSON, N.H. BAE Systems completed additional ground-to-air test firings to demonstrate the feasibility of 70-mm rockets guided by APKWS [advanced precision kill weapon system] guidance kits against Class-2 unmanned aerial systems (UASs), reporting going "five for five" against the UASs in its test shots. 

NEWPORT, R.I. The U.S. Navy's Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport has contracted with Saab to modernize and qualify the MK39 EMATT [expendable mobile antisubmarine warfare training target], a small (3 feet/22 pounds) sonobuoy-size unmanned underwater vessel (UUV) programmed to conduct various anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training scenarios. 

DUBLIN. VR simulation company VRAI announced a collaboration with Microsoft to bring next-generation simulation to military end users, with a product leveraging virtual reality (VR), machine learning (ML), and the Microsoft Azure cloud-computing platform.

WASHINGTON. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) unveiled a cybersecurity plan and roadmap that lays out a zero-trust strategy that will guide DoD agencies in their cybersecurity investments and efforts in the coming years to reach a certain level of zero-trust maturity over the next five years

The digital-battlefield market, which totaled $43.2 billion in 2022, is slated to grow to $154.1 billion by 2030, according to a new report from MarketsandMarkets, "Digital Battlefield Market by Solution (Hardware, Software, Service) Platform (Airborne, Naval, Land, Space), Application, Technology (Artificial Intelligence, IOT, Big Data, 5G, Cloud Computing and Master Data Management) Region -- Global Forecast to 2030."

WASHINGTON. The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) oversaw the delivery and preparation for launch of its twin 6U CubeSat satellites during mid-October at Spaceport Cornwall in Newquay in southwest England. 

NASA KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. The launch of the unmanned Artemis I mission, NASA’s first step in returning to the moon, is carrying a host of critical components that power the flight computers, flight-control systems, and payloads on both the Space Launch System (SLS) and the Orion spacecraft. NASA successfully launched the Artemis I from Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday, November 16.

NASA KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. NASA's uncrewed Orion spacecraft launched with the agency's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket during the early hours of November 16, 2022, on its way to the moon as an initial flight test of NASA's deep-space exploration program.  

PASADENA, Calif. Artificial-intelligence (AI) company Virtualitics announced a partnership with U.S. Air Force command Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) to establish a Center of Excellence focused on delivering AI-enabled software solutions for bomber and missile weapon systems to increase aircraft availability and mission readiness. 

SILVER SPRING, Md. Wideband Systems Inc. (WSI, a Delta Information Systems company) was chosen by the U.S. Navy to supply Wideband DRS8500X telemetry recorders for use as signal recorders for field use.  

TURKU, Finland. Artificial intelligence (AI) company MarshallAI has signed a cooperation agreement with the U.S. Army under which the pair will further develop the MarshallAI platform, which was designed to analyze the battlefield environment on behalf of a soldier in order to free up resources for the execution of other pressing tasks.

WAKEFIELD, Mass. The PICMG consortium has ratified the new COM Express 3.1 specification to support high-speed serial interfaces such as PCIe Gen 4 and USB4.

LOWELL, Mass. The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) and Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) officially opened a state-of-the-art RF/Microwave Learning Lab UMass Lowell on November 7, a facility that will enable UMass Lowell to embed cutting-edge technology within engineering students’ educational interactions.

A new effort led by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is focusing on gathering innovative artificial intelligence (AI) approaches that can help adults learn complex topics necessary for the current and future national security workforce, including workers in AI engineering and cybersecurity/cyberdefense.
