LONDON. U.K.-based defense technology company BAE Systems announced that it plans to acquire Ball Aerospace (Westminster, Colorado) for $5.5 billion.

CHICAGO. The global artificial intelligence (AI) market, which totaled $150.2 billion in 2023, is predicted to grow to $1.35 trillion by 2030, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 36.8% during the forecast period, according to a new report by MarketsandMarkets, "Artificial Intelligence Market." 

LOWELL, Mass. The University of Massachusetts at Lowell (UMass Lowell) recently received nearly $5.5 million from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Innovation Institute at the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative to develop a new hub at the university that offers a one-stop support system for researchers and businesses seeking to design, build, and test small satellites and spacecraft components.

SEATTLE. Software-integration startup Integrate won a $1.25 million contract from the U.S. Space Force to improve the Space Force's program-management software platform. 

ANDOVER, Mass. Mercury Systems announced that it delivered the processing hardware for the U.S. Army’s first six Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) radars, being built by Raytheon (an RTX business).

LAFAYETTE, Colo. Blue Canyon Technologies (BCT) -- a subsidiary of RTX -- announced the successful launch and initial contact with CubeSats for the NASA Starling mission, a technology demonstration aimed at proving the success of cooperative groups of spacecraft operating in a swarm, or an autonomous, synchronous manner. 

NEWARK, Del. Materials-science engineering company W. L. Gore & Associates is slated to present a new technical paper focusing on the modular open systems approach (MOSA) at the Ground Vehicle Systems Engineering & Technology Symposium & Modernization Update (GVSETS), to be held on August 15, 2023, in Novi, Michigan. 

PHILADELPHIA. Artificial intelligence (AI) software provider ZE Government Solutions (ZEGS) was chosen by the Air Force Research Lab's AFWERX directorate to fulfill a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract focused on threat detection using indoor/confined-space uncrewed aerial systems (UASs) for U.S. Air Force users. 

PALMDALE, Calif. Northrop Grumman and the U.S. Air Force (USAF) report a successful demonstration of Northrop's integrated airborne mission transfer (IAMT) system with the B-2 "Spirit" stealth aircraft, performed recently at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, the B-2's home base. 

SAN JUAN, P.R. Uncrewed aerial system (UAS) company Red Cat announced that its Teal Drones subsidiary received a purchase order worth $2.6 million from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to supply a quantity of its small UAS (sUAS) to the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), a DoD combat support agency. 

ATLANTA. Network-security developer CodeMettle will execute a contract to provide the software-management and configuration component for all-domain agile command-and-control (C2) systems for National Guard Air Force Special Warfare (AFSPECWAR) forces.  

WATERTON, Colo. Lockheed Martin opened a facility that will house the company’s Space Development Agency (SDA) Tranche 1 Transport Layer satellites; the facility is intended to streamline small satellite (smallsat) development, demonstrations and processing to enable high-rate delivery.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. Digital-systems integrator Parry Labs has been chosen for two projects under the Aviation and Missile Technology Consortium (AMTC) MOSA [modular open systems approach] agreement, tasks that are aimed at collaboratively defining the U.S. Army's MOSA requirements for computing and software operating environments for all future Army aviation procurements.

GREENLAWN, N.Y. BAE Systems signed a $15 million contract with the U.S. Navy to deliver its next-generation digital interrogator for maritime vessels, which the company details will have capabilities including those that can enable users to gain time-critical insights that reduce friendly-fire incidents and support mission success in hostile environments.

Sikorsky (a Lockheed Martin company) completed four verification demonstrations of its RAIDER X system -- its entry in the competition for the U.S. Army's Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) -- with third-party integrators validating its modular open systems approach (MOSA), in preparation for the first Army-led event verifying the technology.
