Fifth-generation wireless technology, or 5G, is poised to emerge in a big way into the defense market. While the buzz surrounding the 5G technology standard has been growing in the general public in recent years, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has been trailing behind commercial entities on adopting 5G due in part to both the slower pace of the DoD’s acquisition process and the hard-to-keep-up-with pace of consumer-technology refresh. However, officials at several defense communications companies agree that it’s just a matter of time before 5G-enabled military solutions are deployed and forever change the way in which the armed forces communicate.

BETHESDA, Md. The U.S. Army through the Consortium Management Group (CMG)/ Consortium for Command, Control and Communications in Cyberspace (C5), awarded Lockheed Martin a Project Agreement to continue development of the Terrestrial Layer System (TLS) program, which will provide situational awareness capabilities to the U.S. Army.

SAN JOSE, Calif. Low boom supersonic transport company Exosonic, Inc. has announced a Direct to Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract award from the U.S. Air Force (USAF). The contract will fund the development of a low boom supersonic uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) demonstrator.

FINLAND. Senop Oy, a part of Patria group who specializes in defense, security, and aviation life cycle support services, has won an order for the development of night vision sensors for the Finnish CV9030 Infantry Fighting Vehicles.

FAIRFAX, Va. CGI has won a $100 million Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) Data Transformation of Foundational Military Intelligence (DTMI) task order to evolve the way the DIA processes its intelligence, military, and infrastructure data.

DataPath, Inc., provider of communications solutions and technical support services, announced they have won a Global Tactical Advanced Communication Systems II (GTACS II) Task Order (TO) by U.S. Army Contracting Command - Aberdeen Proving Ground (ACC-APG) on behalf of the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) Integrated Logistics Support Center (ILSC) C3T Directorate.

COURTLAND, Ala. Lockheed Martin is adding to its portfolio with the opening of an advanced production facility in Courtland, Alabama, focused on hypersonic strike production. Capitalizing on critical digital factory capabilities, the corporation is working with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to deliver next-generation warfare capabilities.

WILSONVILLE, Ore. Collins Aerospace announced that the company has completed a test flight intended to prove the effectiveness of its Enhanced Vision System (EVS) on a C130J aircraft. EVS is designed to increase situational awareness on commercial and business aircraft, and this test brings the system closer to military use.
 

EUROPE. Turkey’s land systems manufacturer Otokar and the European robotics and autonomous systems developer Milrem Robotics signed a teaming agreement during the DSEI 2021 exhibition in London to merge resources for autonomy development and application for unmanned and robotic operations of military vehicles.
